August Harvest

You've been nurturing your garden all summer long, and now it's finally time to reap the benefits. August is harvest time! Which means that there are a variety of fruit and vegetables ripe for the pickin'. Or if you skipped the garden this year, late August is a great time to take a Saturday morning trip to your local farmers' market. Here's a list of produce that's in season now:

If you're harvesting from your garden, here are a few tips on how to tell if your produce is really ready.

Sweet corn
Silks turn brown or black.

Heads become solid and dense.

Harvest before the flower buds open.

Stone Fruit
Wait until they're a tad soft and pull away easily.

Leaves turn yellow and start to curve.

Pick at least once a week to catch them at their best since berries ripen at different rates.
